🔵 HOW TO COLLECT PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES FOR LIVE SHOWS

Why it Matters:
Every time you perform your original songs live, you’re entitled to performance royalties from your Performing Rights Organization (PRO). If you’re not submitting your setlists, you’re leaving money on the table!

Step 1: Ensure You’re Registered with a PRO

  • If you haven’t already, sign up with a PRO:
    • ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC (U.S.)
    • PRS for Music (UK)
    • SOCAN (Canada)
    • APRA AMCOS (Australia)

Step 2: Keep Track of Your Live Performances

  • Write down where and when you performed.
  • Keep a record of which songs you played and their durations.
  • Many PROs allow you to submit setlists for venue gigs, festivals, and even live-streamed performances.

Step 3: Submit Your Setlist to Your PRO

  • Log into your PRO’s online portal.
  • Find the “Live Performance” or “Gig Submission” section.
  • Enter:
    • Venue details (name, location, date)
    • Songs performed (must be registered in the PRO system)
    • Set length and other requested details

Step 4: Track Your Payments

  • PROs distribute live performance royalties quarterly or biannually.
  • Payments vary based on venue size and agreement with the PRO.

Step 5: Make This a Habit

  • Submit every gig, no matter the size—it adds up over time!
  • Some PROs allow batch submissions, making it easier to report multiple performances at once.

Pro Tip:

If you’re playing internationally, check if your PRO has reciprocal agreements with foreign PROs to collect royalties from overseas gigs.
